Gulangyu Island has its stories. Breathing in the air of this place, you can almost hear whispers of the past – the voices of craftsmen as they built mansions, the rustle of oak trees and cotton trees swaying in the wind as described by the poet Shu Ting. You can almost see the beads of sweat on Dr. Lin Qiaozhi’s forehead late at night, and feel the quiet presence of banyan trees spreading their roots and branches, claiming the green space, growing freely in every direction.

Whether it's heading to school, the mall, hospital, bus stop and beyond, the possibilities are diverse…The questions arise: Where are they go? Who accompanies them on their journey? And how do they go?

Taking the opportunity of a global journey, I started using a digital camera. After disembarking from the world tour, I began a 30-day wander in Tokyo. Having become accustomed to, and even somewhat tired of, seeing Japanese people on the ship, I finally saw them in their most authentic environment. During these thirty days, I started to further observe and study the Japanese people.
